It seems that when I take a train into some big city, I always cut my station arrival down to the last minute. Perhaps I misestimate the time it takes to get to the train station, the time it takes to find a parking space, or any long lines at the information and ticket windows.
I always plan for a trip with several of my favorite snacks or a meal that is usually organic. Maybe due to that preparation time, it probably is one of the reasons I’m always running for the train. Taking food on an airplane is different than what I would pack for a road trip, bus or train trip.
One time a friend and I were running to a small train station in England, only to find out there was a long line at the ticket window. We were trying to estimate if we had enough time to make the train departure. I kept looking at the time as the line moved forward with each person that purchased a ticket. Finally it was our time to purchase tickets, with one minute left to the departure time. We then rushed through the gate, ran towards the train, hopped into a car and searched for vacant seats.
We found a couple of seats and with a sigh of relief, sat down. I was checking to see if I had brought everything with me that I needed. My friend was hungry and I thought what better time than to bring out my snacks.
I started bringing out the food and placing it on the small table between us. There was some lunch meat, rolls, and Brie cheese to make a scrumptious sandwich. My friend was surprised when afterwards I brought out sparkling mineral water, fruit, nuts, and some dark chocolate to top off our lunch.
This made for an enjoyable train ride into the city. When we arrived at our destination, with our stomachs full, we could quickly get on our way to the museum we planned to tour. Later we spent our time walking through London’s St. James’s Park, watching people and enjoying the lovely spring day.
Having snacks when traveling makes for a more pleasant travel day either by flight, train, bus or car ride. I prefer to have a bit of protein whether it’s some kind of meat or cheese. If I can make a sandwich ahead of time, that’s even more convenient. Since I cannot pack liquids for a flight unless I purchase them after getting through airport security, I take fruit like an apple, pear, or orange to quench my thirst. Trail mixes, beef jerky, turkey sticks, cut up veggies, crackers and some kind of chips are also convenient items items to have on any trip.
Hard boiled eggs are easy to take and are also a good quick protein snack. Sometimes I pack a tuna fish salad in a small container. Although one time I had some delicious barbecued ribs with organic greens, for a very long flight. The passengers around me were staring at the food and wondering where I had gotten it! I also like to take something sweet like my healthy, homemade, sugar free (made with stevia) organic brownies or at least a little bit of dark chocolate.
A small, insulated cooler bag with an ice pack, is great to store food for long airplane trips. It will easily fit into an inflight bag. For trips by ground transportation you can even bring a bigger one. If you are traveling in your own vehicle on a long trip, you can then take as large of a cooler that you desire.
