I like to be well organized in advance, before I travel. Whether you go by air, train, bus or car, similarly needed items can be packed, to make your travel comfortable and convenient.
Noise canceling headphones are very important to me, especially if I want to get some sleep, or watch a movie on a tablet, laptop, mobile phone, or the seat back screen. They cancel out the noise from the plane or vehicle and allow you to hear the music or movie much better. Also, I pack a good set of ear plugs. A sleep mask and a hat help to block out the light if you like it to be darker.
To add to your comfort, there are travel pillows available almost anywhere you go. If you are flying, airlines usually supply them only on long flights in the economy classes. I personally like the inflatable travel pillows. Then I can adjust them to the pressure which is most comfortable for me. There are travel pillows with a zipper that have a blanket inside. But you can only use it as a pillow or a blanket, since once the blanket is taken out of the pouch, it no longer is a pillow. If you take along two, then you’ll have a pillow and a blanket.
Some people enjoy taking a book or audiobook, especially a paperback book, that is easy to pack and carry. But nowadays you see many people with their computer laptops, tablets, e-book readers, and mobile phones, to either watch a movie, listen to music, read an article or book, or do work. If you’re packing electronics for your travel, be sure to bring along charging cords, any necessary cables, and back up batteries.
Take any medications, vitamins, supplements, essential oils (for inflight – 3oz max plastic bottle) or homeopathic remedies that you will need while on your trip. I usually mix a few drops of an essential oil with some cream and put it in a small container for in-flight use. Also, there are great homeopathic jet leg tablets which I always take on flights and I find them very helpful. I use other homeopathic remedies as well while traveling, and they come in convenient small packages or vials.
I take along a durable fabric bag, that you see for shopping at the supermarkets, which folds up into its own little pouch. This is where I keep the smaller items to help me stay organized, during a flight or road trip. Then when I arrive at my destination I empty out the bag and fold it up into its little pouch. I can also use it for other reasons, like going grocery shopping, or going to a pool or the beach.
I enjoy having my own slippers in which to walk around, when I’m in-flight. There are thin and even foldable “hotel slippers” that are light and easy to pack. Most airlines supply their business class or first class passengers with these, or else socks. Socks will soak up any moisture that’s on the floor, but your feet will stay protected in the slippers.
If you are traveling with valuable jewelry, I recommend getting a travel jewelry roll or bag, and packing it in your in-flight carry-on. This way it’s always in your possession or close by.
For long trips, you may want to bring some toiletry items, like a small bottle of lotion or a jar of cream, soap, contact lens case, disinfectant wipes, deodorant, a small tube of toothpaste, and toothbrush. The ladies might want pack a bit of their make up to freshen up.
When traveling, remember to stay hydrated, especially on planes. I take my own filtered water with me when traveling to the airport, whether it’s a long or short drive. If you’re taking your own water, be sure to drink it before going through airport security or it will be taken away. If I’m not traveling by airplane, I like to take plenty of filtered water with me regardless of the length of the trip. Another tip is if you’re taking water with you to the airport, keep the empty water bottle to take on the plane. This way you can fill it on the plane and have water after you get off, in case you get thirsty while having to wait at customs or at baggage claim.
Depending on where you are traveling to and if it is practical, you may want to pack a small travel water filter and container to use during your trip. (You can stuff small clothes items or articles in the dry container so that it doesn’t take up that much extra space in your bag.) I have taken it in the past and found it to be very convenient, especially at times when there is no filtered drinking water available. Also, I always take a small bottle of water with me wherever I go, even for a day trip.
It’s always good to have a light jacket or sweater when traveling. An easily packable windbreaker, that comes in a pouch is light and compact to take on a flight. Scarves are a good idea and the bigger ones can also be used as a light blanket. The inside of an airplane, bus or train can become cold and even drafty, while on a long trip.
Another helpful hint: if you are going on a long trip, I suggest packing, in your carry-on, a small amount of clothing which you might need in case your luggage doesn’t arrive. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s quite an inconvenience!
I hope these tips will help you with your travels. I have listed several links below, to make it easier for you to find the items which I have mentioned above. For an even more specific search, where you are looking for an exact item name and brand, type it into the search box of the page that appears when the link is clicked on, and it will then come up immediately.
