My friend and I were walking down a side street off of the main square, in Bruges, Belgium. It was a cold and damp afternoon. The rain was pouring down upon us, and even though we had on our raincoats and umbrellas opened for protection from the rain, we decided to look for a nice place where we could sit down and get warm.
We saw a cozy little café that looked very inviting. So we hurried inside and tried one of the treats that Belgium is best known for — Waffles!!!
We each ordered a waffle and I decided to top mine with strawberries, ice cream, and chocolate syrup. My friend ordered strawberries, chocolate syrup and whipped cream on hers. We were happy to be inside and warming up as we waited in anticipation for our waffles.
When the waffles arrived, she and I were very surprised at their large size and just started laughing. We had quite the challenge ahead of us. But they were so delicious, that we just took our time and had a very nice, interesting conversation, while we eventually finished them off. The flavor was divine and the texture was perfect. I still find it hard to describe them exactly.
The big surprise came when the bill arrived and we saw what an expensive snack we had just eaten! We just laughed again and realized that the overall experience was worth it! So I was reminded of my policy, “When traveling, expect the unexpected!” It was such a delightful afternoon!
We paid our bill, put on our warm raincoats, and opened up our umbrellas as we stepped out the door. I was also happy to have on my rain boots which kept my feet quite warm. So it was one of those memorable experiences that you enjoy with close friends, and to this day we still talk about that afternoon, and all the other experiences we shared.
Each time that I make my own waffles, those Belgian waffles come to mind! So remember during your travels, to explore the area and try the local fare. Appreciate the experience, because you will have those memories forever!

Loved this story. I am pretty organized, but always like to read about personal experiences.
