Pack the Appropriate, Comfortable Clothes & Shoes – You Might Climb A Pyramid!

On February 7, 2019 by Claire

Being prepared for traveling is very important so that you don’t run into inconveniences that often occur. No one likes going somewhere where they packed for hot weather which turned cooler or even cold! Usually that results in buying more clothes at the local stores. Although, this might be to some travelers (ladies), a benefit!

On the other hand, when one packs for cool to moderate temperatures, and then is surprised by how hot the weather becomes, it may become quite uncomfortable.

One time, I found myself in very hot, humid weather, and was sweating profusely, when I decided to climb an ancient Mayan Pyramid. I hesitated about doing it, but then I thought that I would probably never return there again, and I would be so disappointed if I returned home and hadn’t accomplished that feat.

Pyramid at Coba, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

I had brought some food in my fanny pack (waist pack) to replenish my energy, and sat down to cool off in the shade. I dressed appropriately for the hot weather, but really wished I had my hiking boots with me! The sandals I wore had thick soles and they cushioned my feet from the hard solid steps, so that made the trek durable.  I was very happy to have my hat and sunglasses.

Luckily, I was well hydrated with the coconut water I had just drunk from the coco frios (cold coconut). It was full of vitamin C and minerals that helped me keep up my energy. I took my time climbing up to the top, despite uneven, slippery stone steps, up the steep slope. Once I got to the top, I saw the spectacular view of the Yucatán Peninsula from the pyramid at Coba, Mexico.

Climbing down the pyramid was a even more exciting adventure and challenge!  Some of the stones were missing, so I had to be very careful when taking two steps at a time. There was no railing, but only a rope that went through metal hoops, which were attached to the stone steps. Some people were leaning over and holding onto the rope as they went down. Others were stepping backwards one step at a time, while holding onto the rope. Yet, others were sitting on their butts descending slowly. That looked like the safest way to go, which ended up being my choice. Most other people chose that option as well!So my point it is – always pack appropriately for your travel destination and its climate. Also when packing, consider any excursions you will be going on or special events you will be attending.

Tulum, Mexico

If you will be going to several places where the weather will be changing, it is best to pack layers of clothing. When the weather is damp at my destination, I will include thin, silk, long underwear, which is light and doesn’t take up much room in my suitcase, but it sure keeps me warm if needed! I will also take thin gloves, a scarf, and a hat which is easy to pack. Having a coat that has a removable inner lining, also works well, when there is unpredictable weather at your destination.

As far as shoes, I try to find a type that I can use for different occasions and I also take good walking/athletic shoes. One time on a spring trip, I took a very comfortable pair of flip-flop type sandals, that went well with shorts, slacks, or a dress. I also had taken a very light pair of boots which were great for a rainy day or walking through mud! So I didn’t pack many shoes, but I had what was needed for every occasion. I wore the heaviest or bulkiest pair on the plane, which would otherwise take up too much space or weight in my suitcase.

Men need only take a casual/athletic shoe, and dress shoes if required. But you might find yourself needing a pair of sandals or water shoes, if you’re in a warm climate or doing any water activities.

Vacations are great to take and especially enjoyable when you are well prepared with all the necessary clothing and other items!
