Before I take a trip, I do research on places to go, sites to see, historical venues, museums, air and ground transportation. I also check out any holidays and special events, as well as closures. Sometimes there are strikes going on, and there’s a schedule of what days the strikes take place. Also check out the best time of the year as well as the climate, that suits your travel. For instance, booking a place in a warm climate during cold winter months, is attractive for many people.
I usually first decide when I want to go someplace and check airfares if that’s necessary. The further in advance that the airfare is booked, usually, the cheaper the price. I research many different airlines to see who offers the best price as well as the route. I prefer to fly nonstop if possible, since having to change planes can bring on other inconveniences. There could be delays and missed flights, or just having to rush from one concourse to the other to catch the next flight.
I also check the different days of flying, since some days have much cheaper prices, or more convenient flights than other days. Once I know that, then I can arrange my accommodations. (See my other blogs under accommodations.) Sometimes there needs to be a juggling of the days for the travel or accommodations, but if you plan far enough in advance it’s doable. (One thing that I have noticed, is that airfares are sometimes lower if I purchase them from a site on a Tuesday or Wednesday.)
I book the airfare and the accommodations at the same time. This way you’re not stuck with the problem of airfares increasing or the accommodations not being available. Often, hotel accommodations can be held for 24 hours or more, and even some airlines hold the fare price for 24 hours or allow a cancellation within 24 hours. If you’re booking a vacation rental home, then the policies are different, but usually more economical for any class of accommodations than a hotel of the same class.
By doing all this research and planning in advance you’re able to plan a smoother trip. The more you’re prepared, the more pleasant it will be.
